About our first LIVE podcast in front of an audience: How to Stay Sane in an Insane World, with Carol Morley…
Making a podcast in a shed was great fun, but it was time to get a bigger shed. Earlier this summer, Riverside Studios in Hammersmith offered to host our podcast live in their cinema room, in front of a 200-seater audience. It’s a great location on the river, just by Hammersmith bridge. We were also very lucky to have lights, sounds, editing all covered by post-production company West Digital.
Our guest Carol Morley is an exceptional maverick filmmaker who is unafraid to take risks. She almost seems to be attracted to danger – I wonder why!
Earlier this year, Jeremy chatted to Carol about her life and her journey in mental health, interspersed with clips from her films (Typist Artist Pirate King, The Falling, and Dreams of a Life). She is warm, frank, and really honest. Without giving the game away, Carol suffered from a terrible parental tragedy when she was 11 years old. The consequences for her manifested 6 years later, when she pressed every single accelerator in her life and nearly ended up dead.
What became clear was that her book, 7 Miles Out, was also begging to be made into a film – anyone who’s experienced Manchester in the ‘80s and early ‘90s in the Hacienda club would go mad for this. Since then, we’ve heard the great news that this book is indeed being made into a film and has gone into production – congratulations, Carol!
It was terrific to have a live and such a varied audience, who, judging from the Q&A, were really interested and involved. It was great to see Greta Scacchi and Monica Dolan there.
At the end of the evening, we held a screening of Carol’s largely autobiographical film, The Alcohol Years.

When we discovered we needed a bigger boat…
We’re looking to host another 6 live podcast shows at the Riverside Studios. We’re going to have brand new guests from film, TV, music and more, but also we’ll be hosting some past guests from the former Shed Talks (now How to Stay Sane in an Insane World). In some cases, it’s been 3 or 4 years since we first had them on the podcast, and they may reflect on that time and on their own mental health since then. They’ll also talk about the impact that a particular film or TV show had on their recovery.
ABOUT THE PODCAST
‘How to Stay Sane’, formerly known as ‘Shed Talks’, is about interesting people talking about their mental health; how it went wrong, how it came right, and how it stayed right.
Our podcast has transformed from audio-only (recorded in the shed!) to being professionally filmed and recorded in a cinema in London’s Riverside Studios.
